Production Announcement – The Old Apartment

Left of Left Center is very pleased to announce its next production.

THE OLD APARTMENT, a full-length comedy by Ned O’Reilly will run at the Merc Lab in May. Ned will also direct the play and co-produce with Jason Compton. The incomparable Tanis Steed will stage manage and you can expect to see some of Madison’s most inventive actors. Inspired by the ‘90s song by Steven Page and Ed Robertson, the play features seven characters and takes place in four different locations. Dekker, a man who finds himself undervalued, decides to break into the apartment he used to live in with his wife, in order to reconnect with some of his fading memories. When the current tenants come home to a sleeping ‘behemoth’ on their couch, the ensuing domino effect leads to visits to additional former apartments and critical personal discoveries for all involved.

Featuring LOLC’s trademark smart dialogue, the play is a study of marriage, motives, memory, and disillusionment, but maintains the laughs throughout. The dialogue is heavy on character and cross-examination, delivering silliness and biliousness, even in the same exchange.

To date, LOLC’s productions have been presented barn-storming style at various locations around the Madison area. Because this play needs more of a set than our previous shows, we decided to perform the whole run in one place. The Merc Lab has been home to many shows over the years, including the upcoming An Evening’s Affair 2: Shakespeare’s Betrayals, presented by Madison Shakespeare Company and including a number of LOLC stalwarts in its cast and crew.

THE OLD APARTMENT will run May 12th to the 22nd, with show times to be determined as other production decisions are made in the coming weeks. Auditions will be held March 8 and 9 at LOLC’s erstwhile home base, Hanover Farms Retreat.
